The perils of making up your own patterns

I have never used a pattern to sew anything, but I have used tutorials to get myself started. I make stuff up as I go along and if it works, then I keep doing it. I think I’ll keep doing it this way - I don’t want to end up looking like everyone else.
The past few days I’ve been working on a new bag - more square, tapered at the top, and instead of using the ‘jordy bag‘ technique, I’m making the bag with a gusset - which means a total of 11 pieces of fabric for the bag instead of 5 or 6.
I spent late Monday night cutting out the ‘pattern’ - I had a basic trapezoid shape I wanted to try.
Wednesday I went crazy with the gocco and printed my very own design on a whole lot of fabric. I had to stop myself so I wouldn’t use it all up!
Thursday night I pieced together the front of the bag with one of the pieces of fabric I gocco’d and tried to sew the whole thing together… The corners sucked so I ripped out the seams before I went to bed.
I finished up late friday, and I’m very pleased with the result. I was very tired & impatient - I couldn’t wait for better lighting to take the photo, but here it is:
