This one was very fun to make. It’s another painted cover journal, I used red as a base and some watered-down white to make some neat splashy effects. I’ll definitely use those techniques again.

Spacey Soft Journal: a pocket-sized journal, 4 x 5 inches, soft vinyl cover, 160 pages.

These were fun to make. The Spacey journal I made in response to some folks not wanting to “ruin” the painted cover journals I make. I figured I’d find a way to keep my style but add a bit more durability, and on top of that, a bit of waterproofing. I know I’ve spilled more than my share of coffee while writing. The vinyl on the Spacey Journal cover will provide an extra layer of protection against rogue spills.

I make stuff up as I go along and if it works, then I keep doing it. I think I’ll keep doing it this way – I don’t want to end up looking like everyone else.

The past few days I’ve been working on a new bag – more square, tapered at the top, and instead of using the ‘jordy bag‘ technique, I’m making the bag with a gusset – which means a total of 11 pieces of fabric for the bag instead of 5 or 6.

I spent late Monday night cutting out the ‘pattern’ – I had a basic trapezoid shape I wanted to try.

Wednesday I went crazy with the gocco and printed my very own design on a whole lot of fabric. I had to stop myself so I wouldn’t use it all up!

Thursday night I pieced together the front of the bag with one of the pieces of fabric I gocco’d and tried to sew the whole thing together… The corners sucked so I ripped out the seams before I went to bed.

I finished up late friday, and I’m very pleased with the result. I was very tired & impatient – I couldn’t wait for better lighting to take the photo, but here it is:

This is the third incarnation of this bag. The first one was a small hand-sewn pouch, the second was a felt bag, and now this one.

I have RSI affecting both my arms, so hand embroidery is rough sometimes. I decided to play around with the free-motion embroidery setting on my sewing machine & I really liked the scribbly look to it.

The outer fabric is olive green denim, the applique is felt & the inside is a flowery yellow fabric.

This is on its way to a gal in Florida…
